November in Traisteni, Romania, offered us more than just crisp mountain air and stunning views of the Carpathians. It brought us together for something truly transformative. We just wrapped up an incredible Erasmus+ project titled “Open Minds, Open Worlds,” and looking back, that name couldn’t have been more fitting for the journey we undertook.
The entire project was dedicated to tackling some of the toughest challenges facing our societies today: discrimination, social exclusion, and the rise of hate speech. In a world that often feels increasingly polarized, we gathered to find common ground. But we didn’t just discuss these topics in theory; we lived them. Surrounded by the quiet isolation of the mountains, we created a safe, brave space to dig deep into our own biases and assumptions.
Working alongside participants from across Europe, we moved far beyond standard learning. Through the immersive methods of non-formal education, we participated in dynamic workshops and intense simulations that pushed us out of our comfort zones. These activities forced us to step into the shoes of the marginalized and the misunderstood, offering us a glimpse into the harsh realities of inequality. It was often emotional and challenging, but it gave us powerful, practical tools to recognize prejudice—whether it’s a subtle stereotype in a conversation or explicit hate speech online—and, more importantly, how to respond to it effectively.
But the experience wasn’t just about the heavy topics; it was about the people. We arrived as strangers with different cultural backgrounds, languages, and perspectives, but we are leaving as a united community. The late-night conversations, the intercultural exchanges, and the shared vulnerability created a bond that spans borders. We learned that while our specific local struggles might differ, our goal for a fair society is shared.
We are leaving Romania feeling energized, with boosted empathy and a fantastic new international network of changemakers. We are returning to our home countries not just with memories, but with a mission: to apply these lessons in our local communities. This was an unforgettable and eye-opening experience that proved that with open minds, we can break down walls and truly build a more inclusive open worlds.
